Outstanding performance by Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-7) in the last round of the Club Colombia Championship, with four birdies on the last six holes at the Bogotá Country Club, ending the round with a score of 70 shots, one under for the day, finishing in eighth place.
Again, just like on Saturday, the Spanish golfer started off cold and inconsistent, complicating things throughout the first half of the Colombian course, which to his defense, does happen to be the most difficult side. It was the three bogeys on the first five holes that brought him down to the middle of the rankings, far from the top ten...
And once again, fortunately, Gonzalo managed to stay focused with his head on his shoulders to win the course over and was even able to move up in the final rankings in that exasperating yet brilliant final sprint to the finish line with birdies on the 13th, 14th, 16th and 18th holes. And every position he gains in the rankings, most importantly at the top, could be the deciding factor at the end of the season.
This week’s eighth place allowed the golfer from Madrid to move up two positions in the Web.com rankings, going from 21st to 19th, maintaining and reinforcing his place in the top 25, which is the main goal (as a reminder, the top twenty five in the rankings at the end of the season earn the rights to play in the PGA Tour).
Fernández Castaño will now cross the Atlantic to play in the European tour for two weeks, in Oman and Qatar, taking advantage of the one-month break in the Web.com. His goal before this change in scenery was to leave his job in the US well done, and he has definitely succeeded.
