Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño shot PAR in the first round of the Final of the European Tour Qualifying School on the Hills Course at Lumine Golf. The Spanish golfer started off with two two spectacular birdies on the first three holes, but that’s where his performance took a dip in a round where the wind was blowing strong, and it had an impact, even though it wasn’t necessarily a violent wind.
The last eight holes were a bit more drastic, with three bogeys, one to finish the round on the 9th hole, and a birdie on the last par 5 of the day. This puts him at 58th place in the rankings, which means, he’s within the provisional cut of the top 70 and ties, who will make it through after the fourth day, and two shots from the main goal of the week, which is to make it to the top 25 to earn the European Tour card. The 25th place in the rankings is currently situated at -2.
Gonzalo will play on the Lakes Course at Lumine on Sunday. At the moment, the situation is under control and he’s strategically positioned, although because it’s a long week, it’s best to to reach the top of the rankings as soon as possible in order to play with the least amount of pressure in what is such a difficult week as is.
