It’s easy to get six of one and a half dozen of the other with Valderrama. You can never let your guard down on the Sotogrande course, as it constantly puts you to the test in every round, on every hole and in every shot.
Today was Gonzalo Fernández Castaño’s turn (+5). The golfer from Madrid suffered quite a bit to get through a round of 76 shots, and did not make the cut in a very dramatic way.
Just upon finishing the round, it was not clear at all as to whether he would be able to play throughout the weekend, needless to say, if they had to bet on it in that moment, many would have said no. However, as time went on, so did the bogeys, and his +5 started to move up in the rankings. Things were looking up for the Spanish golfer, to the point that Gonzalo even seemed to be within the established cut line.
But a drastic turn of events on the last holes in the last game made a turn for the worse, a complete 180. The +5 was bumped out of the cut again and he finished in 66th place, with his foot halfway in the door. Painful. A tough blow.
Gonzalo will leave Valderrama with a thorn in his side, seeing as how the goal was, at the very least, to make it through to the weekend. On top of that, he came prepared for it. But there’s no other option than to keep his head up and to continue to move forward, to focus on the next challenge at hand.
