Every duel with Valderrama is a full-force battle. Gonzalo Fernández Castaño’s first round in the Andalucía Valderrama Masters was no exception. Much less so after how things started off, with a 3-putt on the 1st hole, another on the 6th and a partial score of +3 in the first hour and a half of play.
The battle was clearly in favor of the Sotogrande course. But the Spanish golfer held on for dear life, getting shots off as best he could. Step by step. Swing by swing, with patience and determination. He had some great shots off the tee and enough faith to recover when he didn’t make the green. Because today, the irons weren’t especially on point.
Be that as it may, Gonzalo made three birdies on the back nine and managed to tie things up. A round of par, well fought and very courageous at that, seeing as how he started off and how difficult the afternoon session was.
Gonzalo is now in 27th place, just two shots from the top ten and five from leaders, Sergio García and Joost Luiten.
