Turbulent day of golf for Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño in the second round of the Web.com Tour Championship. Making birdies was a necessary element for a comeback and the Spanish golfer got to work straight away. The first birdie was on the 1st hole and then three more on the 6th, 7th and 9th holes, and continued that way up to seven without making an error up until the 13th hole. His partial score of six under par for the day from the 6th to the 13th holes was majestic.
Gonzalo had made it halfway through with a flawless performance. The cut was pretty much in the bag and he was even bordering the top of the rankings at times. Rock-solid effort. The Madrid native made it past the first hurdle and earned the right to hold onto his dream, although the bittersweet taste left in his mouth from the three final bogeys in the end on holes 15, 16 and 18 was inevitable.
Be that as it may, Gonzalo made the cut and is still alive, although he will need two very low rounds on Saturday and Sunday to reach his goal of earning the PGA Tour card for next year. The good news is that he’s already shown he can reel in his game and stick to a low score on the Atlantic Beach course. If he manages to putt like he did yesterday and to reduce his errors, Gonzalo will still have a lot left to fight for in Florida.
