Gonzalo Fernández Castaño was one of the best from tee to green in the first round of the Web.com Tour Championship in the grand finale of the PGA Tour silver division at Atlantic Beach, Florida.
The Spanish golfer brought out the best version of his long game, having caught ten fairways and fifteen greens. He got tangled up along the way, it’s true, but it didn’t trip him up too much. His solid game and good work prevailed, but it wasn’t enough to capitalize on his sound game in a round where birdies were highly abundant.
Gonzalo shot a 70 in the first round of the tournament where, to get an idea, Sam Saunders shot a 59, leader of the pack. Low scores are a necessity to make it to the top, exactly what Gonzalo needs to get a shot at one of the 25 PGA Tour cards granted in the finals of the Web.com Tour.
Gonzalo needs to finish in the top five to reach his goal. He’s far from it at the moment, but there’s still a lot of room left to work with. The first thing he needs to do is make the cut, and to do so he’ll need to shoot below a 70 today. No other option.
Gonzalo made five birdies and four bogeys. His putt was a bit off. Some of the bogeys were even victims of 3-putts. Today it’s time to rise to the challenge and to make birdies like there were no tomorrow.
