Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño is already in the top 25 in the order of merit in the Web.com Tour Finals after the first tournament. First goal achieved. A step forward. Remember that the top 25 of the rankings after the four tournaments of the Finals will be the ones who obtain the PGA Tour card.
It’s true that he could have done better after the first three rounds, and before taking on the last six holes of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in Ohio. But it’s inevitable to feel that way, seeing as how Gonzalo was geared toward the top ten before finishing with three bogeys between the 13th and 17th holes, but the most important thing is to be in the top 25, and the Spanish golfer, for the moment, is there.
It was a painful round. Gonzalo shot a 74, fighting for every shot and every opportunity. It didn’t go very well off the tee, nor with the irons, nor with the putter. He had no choice but to roll his sleeves back and fight, knee-deep in the struggle to keep from sinking into deeper issues. It was a survival round and Gonzalo got the most he could out of it.
This week, there is no Web.com Tour Finals tournament. He’ll be back in action next week in the Albertsons Boise Open in Idaho. Objective: continue in the top 25.
