Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-1) shot a 69 in the first round of the Wyndham Championship, which leaves him at eight shots away from the leader, Matt Every (-9) and thus, far from his objective, seeing as how he needs to finish in first or second place to maintain the rights to play in the PGA Tour.
The Madrid native started off strong on the 10th hole at the Sedgefield Country Club (Greensborough) with the first nine under his belt, having caught a high percentage of fairways and regulation greens (close to one hundred percent), and with a partial score of two under par on that stretch. However, he left quite a few good options untouched along the way, and suddenly, the first few errors cost him the first bogeys of the round.
Once again, the Spanish golfer could not find a way to land medium-long distance putts, which obligated him to place the ball close to the flag to start accumulating birdies: he made four, and none of them were putts from more than a meter and a half away. On a course in which low scores are highly abundant, Gonzalo is currently situated outside the cut line, thus, he needs an outstanding second round to secure his presence this weekend and to move closer to the top positions.
