Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (27 points) finished the Barracuda Championship with a total of three points on Sunday, insufficient to make it to the top of the pack. The Madrid native ended up in the top 40, in 36th place. His long game was worthy, but the putter just didn’t quite manage to warm up throughout the entire week at Montreux Golf and County Club in Reno, Nevada.
Gonzalo made three birdies and three bogeys, which equals out to three points (two for each of the birdies and minus one for each bogey). The win was worth more than 40 points, another clear demonstration that in the PGA Tour, those who make it to the winner’s circle are the ones that make a lot of birdies.
Be that as it may, Gonzalo should come out of the Barracuda with the satisfaction of knowing that his long game is in pristine shape, probably some of his best weeks, excellent news for the next and last tournament of the season: Wyndham Championship.
Gonzalo will bet his entire future all one card. He needs an exceptional performance to maintain the PGA Tour card and to avoid the Web.com Tour Finals. He can only win or come in second, there are no other options. Demanding, yes, but not impossible. He has two weeks ahead now to prepare for his last shot.
If he does not reach the objective in the Wyndham, he will have to play in the Web.com Tour Finals, a chance for the comeback (four tournaments with their own order of merit) in which he’s already secured a spot. Those who finish the FedEX Cup between 126th and 200th place qualify to play. Gonzalo is currently in 182nd place.
