Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (16 points) will play in the Barracuda Championship this weekend. That’s good news in itself, seeing as how the Madrid native has managed to break a long dry spell that had been building up from the last five weeks.
And he’s not far from the top of the rankings. With the style of play in this PGA Tour tournament (modified stableford), the Spanish golfer is just two eagles away from the leader, American golfer Richy Werenski, and just two birdies from the top ten.
Gonzalo made four birdies and two bogeys this Friday, which adds up to a total of six points. Thus, he’s currently situated at 19th place in the rankings. It’s a good position, but he needs to take it up a notch in order to dive head first into the fight for the win, and he’s not at all far from his goal.
Gonzalo just needs small details to fall into place. He could have come out with ten points from the round on Friday, with a few small tweaks, and would have been in sixth place. He wasn’t far off from making two more birdies, although it’s also true that he saved a great par on the 5th hole with a putt from six meters away.
The reality is that, despite the problems he had with the rod on his driver, Gonzalo’s long game continues to look promising and thus, he should be able to count on two really low rounds this weekend. This Saturday he’ll play starting at 12:40 pm, local time at Montreux Golf in Reno, nine hours later in Spain, alongside Tag Ridings.
