Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño accumulated ten points in the first round of the Barracuda Championship, a magnificent rhythm to reach the top of such a peculiar PGA Tour tournament, held in the modified stableford format.
The Madrid native shot six birdies and two bogeys, his ten points distributed as two for each birdie (12) minus the two left, one for each bogey. A great start to the tournament. He’s currently in 21st place, one point from the top ten and five from leader, John Huh (15).
And he could have even got off to a better start. Gonzalo played amazingly from tee to green and he created many options for birdie. Of the six he landed, only one was a putt from more than two meters away, and he left a good handful of opportunities along the way from between four and six meters out.
In any case, Gonzalo’s powerhouse start is a good sign of what’s to come in the tournament. The best part of the round was on the first nine holes. Gonzalo set off with a vengeance and accumulated nine points, with five birdies and just one bogey.
This Friday he’ll play once again with Armour and Hagy in the afternoon session, at 12:33 pm, nine hours later in Spain (9:33 pm).
