Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (PAR) did not make the cut in the Barbasol Championship, although the second round had nothing to do with the first round, and was what very well could have been the start of an imminent comeback in the near future. The Madrid native shot a 66 at RTJ Golf Trail Grand National Lakes, five under par for the day, which among other things, is his second best score of the entire 2016-2017 season, just after the 65 he shot in the Zurich Classic at the end of this past April.
Fernández Castaño was really solid from tee to green this time, catching almost eighty percent of the fairways and fourteen regulation greens, and he even sank it from the fairway on the 14th hole (he teed off on the 10th), a shot from almost 120 meters away for an eagle that got him hopeful again. After the bad score on Thursday on a course where many low scores are made, he needed something just short of a miracle to make the cut, and he wasn't too far off. If anything, and although he improved his performance on the putt, he was still lacking a bit on the greens, as he should have been able to land a put from more of a medium to long distance away from the hole.
Thus, the Madrid native will walk away with a good sensation after all is said and done, now on his way to Ontario, where he’ll play in the RBC Canadian Open next week. A tournament that brings back amazing memories, which is also where he came out of a delicate situation three years ago, in 2014, with an outstanding top-5 spot in the rankings.
