Gonzalo Fernández Castaño didn’t get off to an ideal start in the Greenbrier Classic, PGA Tour tournament held on TPC Old White course in West Virginia. Quite the contrary, rather. Dark and dreary start tainted by a double bogey on the very first hole.
Gonzalo shot a 73 (+3) in the first round of the tournament, and needs a good comeback today in order to make it through to the weekend. It’s not impossible, far from it, but he’ll have to be on point in all aspects of his game due to the fact that he is currently situated at four shots from the cut.
Gonzalo, as we mentioned, started off with a double bogey and another nine holes of pure madness, with two birdies and three more bogeys. After the 1st hole (his tenth), the calm after the storm settled over. Too calm, probably. Nine pars in a row which did not allow for him to move up in the rankings.
The Madrid native was too inaccurate on his long game on a course which has a high rate of birdies; the leader is now Sebastián Muñoz with a -9.
Speaking of the leader, the Colombian golfer admitted after signing his card that the key to his good round was Gonzalo’s own advice on Wednesday on the putting green.
Thus, today it’s time to make the comeback in the morning session. Gonzalo will play starting at 8:20 am, local time, six hours later in Spain.
