Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+2) did not make the cut in the Travelers Championship. He already suspected as much from hole 1. The round started off on the wrong foot. His shot off the tee landed on the rough, poorly positioned, and he couldn’t even get it to go forty meters, ending up with a double bogey.
From there, it was an uphill battle. He couldn’t get any good shots off, and caught greens, but couldn’t get the ball to land near the flag. He struggled quite a bit, yet even then he managed to stay in the fight to make the cut up until the 16th hole, having saved some incredible pars along the way.
Gonzalo almost made it out alive until he missed a putt from a meter away for par on that particular par 3, on the 16th, and ended up missing the cut by two shots.
He had still managed to create an option for birdie on the 17th, but missed the putt for birdie from four and a half meters away. He finished with a score for par on the 18th, and thus, did not make the cut. A shame, due to the fact that Gonzalo is currently at a great point in his game. He feels like he’s doing things well and he just needs a good, solid score to bring him back up and to give him the necessary confidence.
The Madrid native will now take an obligatory week-long break, because he didn’t receive an invitation to play in the Quicken Loans National, and will be back in action in the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia. Another opportunity to get closer to the top 125 of the FedEX Cup to maintain the PGA Tour card.
