Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-1) shot a 69 in the first round of the Travelers Championship held at TPC River Highlands (Cromwell, Connecticut).
The Spanish golfer had it all under control; he made two birdies and one bogey, although he lacked a bit of finesse on the greens in order to have moved up higher in the rankings, such as on the 11th, 2nd and 4th holes, a good opportunity to create options from distances less than three meters away. Although, it’s also important to note the incredible par he saved on the final stretch of the round, on the 6th hole (he teed off on the 10th), having made the putt from around two and a half meters away.
But the Madrid native is still in the fight. The rankings are really tight with the leader, Jordan Spieth (-7), at just six shots ahead, and the top ten at three. Thus, the cut is provisionally established at -1, the same score Gonzalo finished with today, which means he will most likely need to shoot another round under par to play over the weekend.
He’ll play this Friday starting at 12:10 am local time (6:10 pm Spanish time).
