If there had to be two key reasons for why Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+4) did not make the second cut at the FedEX St. Jude Classic, it wouldn’t be too hard to point them out. One, the balls he shot into the water on the first third of the round on the 12th and 14th holes at TPC Southwind (Memphis). And the other, the good handful of putts from a pretty short distance that he missed, and which kept him from making the comeback.
But the Madrid native, despite his devastating start (he was at four over par for the day after just five holes), proved that his perseverance remains in tact. He tried to get back on track and he actually succeeded, creating four magnificent options for birdies on the 16th, 18th, 2nd and 3rd holes, from distances which were no further than three meters away. He didn’t manage to land any of them, but he refused to give in even then, and he kept his eyes on the prize, which ended being the two outstanding birdies he made in the end on the 4th and 6th holes, which left him at just one shot away from the cut at that moment. He would have needed one more birdie, but unfortunately he got another bogey instead on the 18th, making it impossible for him to move forward.
The Spanish golfer’s next tournament will be the Travelers Championship, held after the US Open from the 22nd to the 25th of June at TPC River Highlands (Cromwell, Connecticut).
