Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+1) accomplished his main objective in the FedEX St. Jude Classic, just as it had to pan out on Thursday, after signing a well-deserved card for 68 shots and just barely making it past the cut. He’ll still have to make the cut on Saturday, the second cut, due to the fact that 86 golfers, which were the top 70 and ties, made it through as well...
The Spanish golfer continues to struggle off the tee, but on the other hand, he was much more accurate in other areas of the game, with excellent shots to green when he had the opportunity and making some great putts, most of all the first two for birdie which he landed on the 12th and 13th holes (he started out on the 10th hole) from more than seven meters away both times. He made a double bogey on the 15th after hitting the ball into the water which complicated things quite a bit, but he came back again with excellent birdies on the 3rd and 5th holes, making room for the opportunity to play on Saturday.
Although it continues to be a tight situation for the Spanish golfer at TPC Southwind in Memphis, the good news is that the rankings continue to be tight as well (the leaders, Reavie, Schwartzel and Muñoz are at -9, ten shots away from the bottom of the rankings) and thus all participants have the option to make a comeback to move up many places with two good rounds.
This Saturday, the golfers will start off again in groups of three, and from both tees on the course, thus the Madrid native will tee off starting at 11:25 am local time on the 10th hole (6:25 pm Spanish time), with Martin Flores and Scott Stallings.
