Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-3) suffered through a difficult round in order to make the cut in the Wells Fargo Championship. He shot a 70 after a sensational round under extreme wind conditions, but he had to wait until Saturday to find out if he could play over the weekend. He came from really far behind and there was no other option. The three-hour delay at the beginning of the day kept him from being able to finish the round.
It was well worth the wait which turned out to be a good thing for both Gonzalo and the actual tournament itself. After making the cut, the Madrid native put on a show in the third round of the tournament, held on the Eagle Point Golf Club course in North Carolina. He shot a 66 and went up almost forty spots in the rankings, making his way into the top 20 with just one round to go. Incredible, action-packed day. Only Dustin Johnson, the Number 1 in the world, moved up more positions on Saturday.
Gonzalo made five birdies and just one bogey. His short game was excellent. Nobody is better on the approach than him around the green in the tournament and his putt worked like a charm for him once again. He started off by saving a par with a magnificent putt from almost four meters away on the 10th hole. A good prediction as to what the next round will look like. He landed the shot from almost all distances, for birdie and for par, although his strongest point was knowing how to come back from a tough spot.
Gonzalo is on point once again and when that happens, it means big things are coming, because he never lost his instinct and willing to fight. He’ll start out on Sunday six shots from the leader. It’s not an impossible distance, not in the least, although it’s also true that there are a lot of players in the running. Be that as it may, Gonzalo will begin the day with the possibility of winning and there’s no doubt that he’ll go for it, full speed ahead.
Gonzalo will start the round off at 6:05 pm, Spanish time.
