Gonzalo Fernández Castaño did not make the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open after signing a card for 78 shots on the South course at Torrey Pines, the Spanish golfer’s black beast. Sooner or later the course ends up defying his resistance and he’s never been able to make it to the weekend at the San Diego club.
Gonzalo, who had a lot of problems off the tee on a course which does not allow for many errors, had already started the round off on a bad foot (double bogey on the 4th), although he responded right away with birdies on the 5th and 6th holes which brought him back to within the cut. In reality, the decisive moment was a dark stretch between the 11th and the 14th holes in which he made three bogeys and a double bogey which knocked him out of the game with almost no room to work with.
Little to no consolation will be of any help to the Madrid native, but the truth is that there were good things worth mentioning this week, such as the first nine holes of the round on Thursday, in which he reached the top of the rankings, although it’s also true that he still hasn’t managed to have a big week that would give his game some breathing room and serve as a foundation for the rest of the season.
