Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño shot a 69 in the last round of the Sony Open with a total of -5. The Spanish golfer finished in 63rd place in the rankings. He’s started the year off accumulating points, even though this weekend didn’t quite live up to the Madrid native’s expectations.
Apart from the results, Gonzalo’s round under par at the Waialae Country Club this Sunday is a tremendous feat. Strong will power, patience and resourceful. He won the course over despite having only caught five fairways and eight greens. A tough day at the office, but straightened out in the end with good results.
Gonzalo’s strongest asset this week was his game around the green and the putt. According to the official PGA Tour stats, he was the thirteenth best golfer of the week around the green. His recovery stats are notable: on 15 of the 27 occasions that he didn’t catch the green, he managed to save the par.
Gonzalo has made it clear, once again, in the first tournament of the year, that he’s willing to fight hard for each and every shot. Good vibes for the tournaments to come. He’ll play again this week in the Career Building Challenge in La Quinta, California.
