Tough day at the Waialae CC. The round went south really quickly for Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño. Bogey on the first three holes and from there it was an all uphill battle. There was no other option.
The action-packed day promptly turned into a struggle to make up for lost ground. Much more so keeping in mind that birdies were the order of the day in the Sony Open.
Gonzalo managed to straighten out the round. He got a partial score of two under par on the fifteen holes that were left and, although he couldn’t win the course over (71 shots), he was able to make the second cut of the week in the Sony Open, the Saturday cut with the top seventy and ties if 80 or more players make the cut, as happened this time in Honolulu.
Gonzalo is currently at -4 in the rankings, 66th place. He’s far from the top, but what’s important here is to accumulate points, as many as possible. The Spanish golfer has another opportunity to make a comeback today, Sunday, and will go into the round with that being his objective. Once again, the organization decided to split up the tee offs on the 1st and 10th holes.
Gonzalo will start in one of the last games of the day (12:00 in the afternoon local time, eleven at night in Spain), with Brian Stuard and Trey Mullinax.
