Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño (-3) shot a 67 in the first round of the Sony Open, PGA Tour tournament held on the Waialae CC course in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Spanish golfer’s first time setting foot on this course and in this tournament and an excellent debut.
Gonzalo made five birdies and two bogeys. He had the necessary patience to look for opportunities for birdies in the final stretch of the round. He made three on the last five holes, including one to finish off the round on the 18th after having left the ball perfectly positioned for an eagle after a putt from thirteen meters out. He’s now in 38th place in the rankings.
Gonzalo was not especially accurate from tee to green. He only caught five fairways (it’s the second course with the least fairways caught in the PGA Tour since 2003) and 12 greens. However, his game around the green and his putt were on point and came to the rescue. He leaned more on that aspect of his game to get things off to a good start.
One of the most crucial moments came on the 12th and 13th holes. It was precisely there, thanks to his short game, where he was able to avoid a bogey on the 13th and made a magnificent par on the next hole.
This Friday he’ll play in the second round starting at 6:10 pm, Spanish time.
