Gonzalo Fernández Castaño will compete in the fourth tournament of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season, at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, held on El Camaleón course (Playa del Carmen, México). It’s not the first time the Spanish golfer will be playing here and he’s ready to finally feel at ease and to get a good score. He didn’t make the cut last year, although in the second round he shot a spectacular 66 which should serve as a guide to follow this week.
There are two pending tasks that await him on this course and on those where he had been practicing during the days leading up to the tournament. On one hand, the correct reading of the greens, which has always been difficult on El Camaleón. And on the other hand, to get past the inevitable intimidation factor this course has on the golfers, any clear miss off the tee means directly losing the ball in the jungle, which surrounds the fairways. The Madrid native knows the theory well: it’s about avoiding unnecessary risks off the tee, of course, but without holding back on the swing, more focused on the possible mistakes than anything else. The key to success lies in striking that balance on the Mexican terrain this week.
The Spanish golfer will play this Thursday off the 10th tee at 8:00 am local time (3:00 pm Spanish time) with American golfers Pat Perez and Martin Flores.
