Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-1) shot a 70 in the first round of the Shriners Hospitals for Children, held at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. The Madrid native managed to get through an entire round without bogeys, sinking some excellent putts to save pars (for example, he finished on the 18th hole by landing a shot from almost twenty meters out) however, missing others from similar distances for birdie.
On the 13th hole, par 5, he made the only birdie of the day, although it could have even been an eagle, because the Spanish golfer was very close to landing a shot from the entrance of the green, at almost twenty meters from the hole. Then on the last par 5 of the day, the 16th hole, Gonzalo saved a miracle par after having sent the ball to the bunker from the tee and after that to the water.
The score is good and more proof to the Spanish golfer’s excellent attitude, although at TPC Summerlin it’s going to be necessary to to give it that extra push to get to the top positions (the cut will probably be set at -2), due to the fact that the leader, Rod Pampling, shot a 60 (-11). The first round was unable to be completed due to lack of light.
