Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño (-1) did not make the cut in the Safeway Open, first tournament of the PGA Tour season held on the Silverado Resort & Spa course in Napa, California. The Spanish golfer was just one step away from playing throughout the weekend.
The final cut was closed at two under par and Gonzalo was just one shot away, an arm’s length distance. It wasn’t an easy round, due to the fact that the game was suspended yesterday because of lack of light with four holes still left to play for the Madrid native. He needed a birdie to make the cut and he made it to the T on the 16th, sinking an excellent putt from three meters out.
However, he made a bogey right after on the 17th and couldn’t manage to get a birdie on the 18th, par 5. The season didn’t start the way Gonzalo had hoped, but the reality is that he was a lot closer than it seems not only from making the cut, but also from getting into the top of the tournament to fight for an important position in the rankings. Now, it’s time to turn the page and move forward and to think about the next tournament: Sanderson Farms Championship the last week of October.
