Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño shot a 72 to start the new season off in the first round of the Safeway Open, the opening tournament of the PGA Tour held on the Silverado Resort & Spa course, in Napa Valley, California.
Gonzalo went into the season on the right foot, making two birdies on the first five holes, sinking an excellent putt on the 13th hole from four meters out and the same on the 14th for an extraordinary shot from 145 meters away, which he left practically in the bag.
After the 16th hole, the sixth of the day, the round started to go downhill largely due to small details. He made a bogey on that hole after missing the fairway, on the 1st hole he couldn’t recover from the rough and on the 2nd he made three putts. On that stretch where the round started to get difficult, it’s also true that Gonzalo’s putt didn’t help much either, other than an important putt from three meters out that he made for par on the 4th. He did, however, finish the day off on a good note with a birdie on the 8th hole, to celebrate his birthday.
Gonzalo is currently at +1, two shots from the provisional cut in the Safeway Open. The most probable turn of events is that he ends up at -2, which means the Madrid native needs a good round today in order to play this weekend. A round from which he was not too far off yesterday. Today he’ll play at 9:20 pm, Spanish time.
