Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño shot a spectacular 67 in the first round of the WinCo Foods Portland Open, last regular tournament of the Web.com Tour after which the overall tour rankings will be finalized, which means, those who are in the top 25 will automatically earn the rights to the PGA Tour card.
Gonzalo still has a chance to get it. He needs to finish in first or second place with no tie to get into the top 25 and return through the fast track to the PGA Tour. His explosive start at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Oregon paved the way toward being able to achieve his goal, although this is just the beginning and there is a long road ahead.
Gonzalo made five birdies and just one bogey, an error around halfway through, although it didn't phase him. Actually quite the contrary, apparent in the fact that on the back nine he made three birdies with no mistakes.
The Madrid native was especially on point on his game around the greens, having recovered from many complicated situations with an incredibly accurate approach and putt.
Gonzalo will play tomorrow at 10:40 pm at night, Spanish time, once again with Jim Renner and German golfer Stephan Jaeger, who shot a stellar 58 just a few weeks ago.
