Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño (-5) shot an astounding 67 in the first round of the Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr. Pepper, Web.com Tour tournament held this week at the Highland Springs CC course in Missouri.
Gonzalo finished an extraordinary round that deserved much more from the start, although he had to wait to the end to see the fruits of his labor. The Madrid native was very solid from tee to green, having missed a whopping 17 of 18 greens. Despite the absolute precision in his game, he had already accumulated two bogeys on the first five holes.
The situation was pretty desperate, but Fernández-Castaño knew how to keep calm up until the end and it definitely paid off. He finished the round off with four stratospheric birdies on the last four holes and an otherwise fairly normal, borderline dangerous round with respect to the cut, turned into a fantastic one. This time the score did adjust to his golf, even if it was just the finale.
Gonzalo is now in seventh place after the first round, just two shots from second place and five from the untouchable leader, Brad Elder (-10).
The Spanish golfer will play this Friday very early, at 7:20 am local time, seven hours more in Spain.
