Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño played a solid week of golf in the Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae, Web.com Tour tournament which represents the beginning of the end, the final sprint toward the finish line. The Spanish golfer shot a 68 which means four out of four days under par, finishing with a total of -12, 17th place.
Gonzalo pulled off an excellent week in California, his second best score of the season, only topped by the ninth place he got in the Rust Oleum midway through June. Thus, it’s a big step forward, although there is still a long way to go to reach the objective of recovering the PGA Tour card.
With this top 20, Gonzalo has moved up six places in the top 25 rankings of the Web.com Tour. He’s currently in 77th place at seventy thousand dollars from 25th place, the main goal of the season. Keep in mind that the top 25 of the Web.com Tour will earn back the PGA Tour card directly.
But the top 25 isn’t the only goal. The second on the list is to finish in the top 75, which is definitely within arm’s length at the moment, less than thirty thousand dollars to be exact. The top 75 of the Web.com Tour will go into the Final Series after the season ends (four more tournaments among the best golfers of the PGA Tour that have lost the card), where 25 more openings are at stake for the American tour.
Gonzalo will play again this week. He’ll be competing in the Digital Alley Open, held in Kansas City.
