Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño starred in an excellent final sprint to the finish line in the third round of the Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae. The Spanish golfer finished with three birdies on the last five holes and shot a 66, placing him in the top 15 of the tournament. He’s three shots from the top ten and six from second place. There’s lots to be done ahead this Sunday in California.
Gonzalo landed five birdies and only made one bogey in the third round. If the same playing conditions are maintained, he would need another good round just like this one this Sunday to leave room to make it to the top ten. The birdies continue to be the focal point yet another week in the Web.com Tour, and there’s no other option than to sink a lot of putts in order to open up the possibilities to reach the top.
The leader of the competition is already out of reach, thirteen shots away from the untouchable Stephen Jaeger, but anything that has to do with ending up in the top 10 or top 5 would be an incredible step forward for Gonzalo this season. In fact, finishing in second would basically leave his presence in the top 25 resolved and, thus, would recover the PGA Tour card for next season. Gonzalo will play this Sunday at 7:45 pm, with Bhavik Patel and Adam Schenk. The tournament has decided that the last round will be played from two tees in groups of three.
