“So close and yet so far away”. That’s how Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño defines his current situation after the first round in the El Bosque Mexico Championship. The Spanish golfer shot a 71 and is now in 41º place, just three shots away from the top ten and six from the leader, American golfer Brian Campbell.
Gonzalo is very close to getting the best version of his game back, which is what he proved on the first fifteen holes of the day, where he made four birdies and not one bogey. That start of the tournament shed light on a lot of good things that happened last week in Valderrama that are continuing to happen this week, especially in the last round of the tournament.
However, it also gives the sensation that he’s far from his objective at the same time. And that’s when a bad end of the round starts to happen, with a bogey and a double bogey on holes 7 and 8. It seems that there is something holding Gonzalo back when he moves hastily and is under pressure. It’s probably just a question of time. He just needs to continue with those good rounds until one comes around full circle, and then an entire tournament. Gonzalo is close and he knows it.
He’ll play the second round today on the El Bosque course, in León, Guajanato, at 7:55 pm, Spanish time.
