Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-5) didn’t finish off the Brazil Champions presented by Embrace with the round he had hoped for. The Madrid native shot a 72, one over par, and instead of moving up, he fell a few spots to 66º place. The ending isn’t easy to digest, but the reality is that Gonzalo has come out with a positive outlook on the round and the tournament in general in Sao Paulo.
It’s true that his game isn’t particularly solid at the moment, but he’s starting to demonstrate the makings of a good golf game to which he should latch onto. Gonzalo’s smile this week should lie in his performance on the par 3s. If a golfer is capable of landing seven birdies on these holes throughout the four days of competition, it means he’s making good shots. End of story.
Gonzalo has a reason to be optimistic, despite the fact that the finale wasn’t the one he had envisioned. His game is continuing to grow and in the moment he is able to minimize his errors, he’ll be neck in neck fighting for the win. After many weeks without competing, playing four days in Brazil was a big step forward which should help in his performance in Cartegena de Indias next week or in the Valderrama Open de España in two weeks.
