Gonzalo Fernández Castaño did not make the cut at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, PGA Tour tournament held in the Riviera Maya, Mexico. It’s not a good feeling, evidently, but he was at least able to walk away from Greg Norman’s design, El Camaleón, with a smile on his face after having shown his true colors.
Gonzalo shot an astonishing 66, with six birdies and just one bogey. He started the round off strong, with the sting of yesterday’s score still fresh on his mind. He made six birdies on the first thirteen holes and put himself in a good position to be able to make the cut. In that moment, he was just one shot away. However, a bogey on the 14th, after having opened with a shot straight to the water, stopped him in his tracks. He continued to fight and created options for birdies, which he really needed on the last four holes, but the putts just didn’t want to sink.
Gonzalo caught ten fairways and fourteen greens, stats much more reflective of his actual level of play than those of the previous day, seven fairways and ten greens on Thursday. The Madrid native left with a sore spot from not having made the cut, but relieved nonetheless to have seen that the game is there, sharp and on point for the Web.com Tour, in Palm Beach in mid-December. The Spanish golfer will attempt to improve his current status in the tour there.
