Gonzalo Fernández Castaño will not be playing in the Spanish Open 2015. The Madrid native confirmed with the following message: “To my great disappointment, I will not be able to make it to the Spanish Open. I’ve been waiting up until the very last minute to see if I placed well at THE PLAYERS which would have allowed me to play in the Open, but the main reason is because I want to play in the PGA Tour to accumulate FedEX points in order to maintain my card, because I’ve had to fight hard to get to where I’m at. I tried to push it up until the very end.”
“I spoke with Gonzaga Escauriaza last week, and he perfectly understood my situation. I imagine that I’ll face some criticism this week, and I totally understand that. I understand that people could be disappointed. I’ve always said that Spaniards should play in the Open, and now I’m not following my own advice. But I also think it’s important to consider that I’ve played in all of the Spanish Opens since I became a professional, and even a few being an amateur, and except in 2011 when I was injured, I’ve never missed my date with the Open. I’m going to miss it a lot, mostly because I really feel like going back to Spain to see my Tour friends and everyone else there. Hopefully at least I’ll do well at the Wells Fargo, that way I won’t feel as bad.”
