Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño didn't cease to rise up in the rankings at the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament. The Spanish golfer finished under 70 shots once again in the fourth and final round of the Japan Tour tournament, finishing in twentieth place.
It's the first time out of his entire eight participations in the Phoenix Country Club in Miyazaki that he didn't end up in the top ten, and the reasons for that can probably be found in the first round, with a total of 74 shots, his worst results of the tournament thus far, and in the outcomes on the 18th, a hole that was the thorn in his spine throughout the week. Despite the fact that it was the third easiest hole on the course, Gonzalo's partial score there was +1. In the end, he finished four shots away from the top ten.
Gonzalo made 69 shots in the last round for a spectacular tournament finale. He started on the 10th hole, with two bogeys on the first nine, one of them on the 18th, however, he finished off with finesse with birdies on the 1st and 4th, and a sovereign eagle on the 7th, the only one to be done on this hole this weekend. The final victory of the tournament went to local idol, Hideki Matsuyama.
Gonzalo, thus, says goodbye to the year 2014 as far as competition goes. The Madrid native will now enjoy some well-deserved vacation time after an intense year.
