Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+5) shot a 76 in the first round of the Open de España, held at the Club de Campo Villa in Madrid, score which has complicated his situation quite a bit in the tournament.
Although a comeback isn’t impossible, the Spanish golfer is going to need an outstanding score in the second round, around 65 shots, in order to make it through to the weekend.
Gonzalo had a hard time on the tee shots in the first round, with too many veering off to the left, precisely on a course where there’s a hefty price to pay for errors off the tee, with so many trees on both sides of the fairway.
The golfer from Madrid, performing in front of his friends and family, held his own throughout the front nine, coming back from a double bogey on the 5th hole with a birdie on the 8th hole, followed by a downward spiral between the 11th and 15th holes, where he made nearly four bogeys in a row to finish out the round.
