Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-4) started off strong in the Portugal Masters after shooting a 67 in the first round. Right after finishing the 18th hole, saving the par with an excellent putt from two and a half meters away, the golfer from Madrid playfully remarked: “I’m the king of Thursdays, tomorrow will be a disaster”, referring to the sensation he’s had this year, which is that he starts off very well many weeks, only to go downhill after that, throughout the week in the following rounds.
“Strangely enough, last year the opposite happened. I would get off to a bad start in the tournaments, and then on Fridays I would have a great shot average, so I’m not sure if this alternates from year to year”, he commented with a good sense of humor at the end of the round.
And the thing is that Gonzalo has managed to get a great score, mostly considering the fact that he only caught four fairways. He was fantastic on the greens, took advantage of all the options he created and, at the same time, was able to resolve difficult situations with the putter.
On Friday, he’ll play in the morning, when it will surely be much more difficult to land so many putts due to inconsistent greens that get worse by the hour.
