Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-8) shot his third consecutive 70 in the last round of the KC Golf Classic, finishing in 36th place. The Spanish golfer was very inconsistent from tee to green in the last round, however, he kept his cool, following through on a majority of the recoveries around the green that he came across, and thus was able to win the duel with the course, the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate in Kansas.
The result, worthy but too short on time on a course where low scores were abundant, which did not help the golfer from Madrid move up in the Web.com rankings, the main goal in these last few tournaments of the regular season. But at least he did not get bumped down either, and is still in 68th place, just as he went into the tournament. Every time he’s got less and less options to access the sought after top 25 of the rankings, which would directly grant him the PGA Tour card for the 2018-19 season. In fact, he’s basically down to one possibility, which is to win in either one of the tournaments he has left to play, or two second places in both.
On a positive note, at least he’s managed to maintain his spot in the top 75 with some room to work with, which will allow him to play in the four tournaments of the Tour Finals, starting in August, where 25 spots will be granted for the PGA Tour. With these goals in mind, Gonzalo will play in the Ellie Mae Classic next week at TPC Stonebrae (Hayward, California, close to San Francisco), the second-to-last tournament on the regular tour calendar.
