Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-2) shot a 72 in the third round of the Irish Open, a score which will maintain his spot in the top 25 of the tournament for now, although there is no real shot at the win anymore going into the last round, seeing as how the leader, Erik Van Rooyen (-14), will start off with a twelve-shot advantage over the Spanish golfer.
After starting the round with six pars in a row, he finally managed to land his first birdie on the 7th hole, however, immediately after he got a bogey on the 8th hole. Gonzalo had solid shots from tee to green, although in this third round, he wasn’t able to take advantage of any of the three par 5s on the Glashedy Links course at the Ballyliffin Golf Club.
Overall, the golfer from Madrid maintained the same balance as in previous rounds, very focused, organized, stayed out of trouble, and most importantly gave off the sensation that he still has that explosive round deep inside that would allow him to shoot up in the rankings. Keep in mind that at this point, any change in position for the better, however big or small, could be the definitive touch at the end of the year as far as the goal to maintain the rights to play in the European Tour, much more so in a Rolex Series tournament where the prize pool is multiplied by five and up to ten times that of other weeks. Thus, the Spanish golfer still has a lot to do and a lot to gain this Sunday on Irish terrain.
Gonzalo will play with Nicolas Colsaerts this Sunday, an old friend from the tour, almost from his same generation, starting at 11:27 am (Spanish time).
